Are Tarot Cards a Sin?

The Tarot can give us a lot of guidance in our lives but what does the Bible say about it? Are Tarot cards a sin?

I’ve had to talk about this fairly often in the past. Even here on Medium I’ve spoken about what the bible says about the Tarot. Obviously this comes down to beliefs. There are absolutely those who will tell you the Tarot is a sin but I’ve yet to find any of them who actually want to discuss the details.

Yes, taken out of context there are lines in the Bible which people quote however if you start taking passages out of context you’ll find lines which support the use of the Tarot as well.

Having personally used Tarot for 40 years, I see it as a kind of “Tool”. Like the use of any tool, the results can be “good” or “bad”. For example, A knife can be used to do work, heal, or kill and maim.

When answering such questions we need to first refer to what the word means. There is one example below. You really need to make up your own mind if any of the descriptions apply. To think for yourself. Asking questions of other people will result in numerous conflicting opinions. Some say for, some against.

You will only discover your own Truth by using the now accepted methods of Scientific Experiment, and seeing what results YOU get. That is, do “detective work” to establish your own FACTS — by personal experience. None of the churches seem to like this.

In my case, I carefully consider the first meaning below which relates to Religion, and seems to include all the others. It seems to me that, generally, organised religions tend to decide on issues in ways that suit themselves, and what might affect their monopoly, or control of people, in society. On the other hand, they do remind us that there is more to this earthly life than mere existence. It was not until my 30s that I decided to depart from this “primary school thinking” to discover my own understanding, and my own personal Life Path in “The University of Life”.

For example, the various churches may or may not consider Tarot Cards to be a sin — and this is likely to be different, depending on which religion you belong to. So who is “right” ? The fact that they do not agree with one another is important to consider.

On the other hand, there is evidence of the practices of various religions throughout history of things that they obviously decide are NOT sins are highly questionable. We again see the common factor of trying to eliminate anyone who thinks for themselves.

Historically, there have been great opposition to new knowledge by the various churches. An example of this is in the prevention of medical knowledge which exists to the present day in such areas as the use of stem cells. I am not saying that there should not be controls, but the tendency is to forbid any kind of experimentation that might result in new knowledge.

Other examples are :-

  • The current “Islamic States” policy of suicide bombing.
  • The Christian Crusades or “Holy Wars” which, although on the surface were to protect Christians in non Christian territories, actually resulted in a lot of killing and theft of property.
  • The 12th. century “Inquisition” of the Roman Catholic Church to stop Heresy — that is, the torture of Catholics who were said to express beliefs contrary to the accepted rule (even children were allowed to accuse their parents). Although many were innocent, they confessed to relieve their pain. The procedure was similar to that of the “Witch Trials” in Britain when people were thrown or “ducked” into water. If they survived they were said to be witches, and burned at the stake — if they drowned they were deemed innocent.
  • The Roman Catholic attitude of preventing Birth Control versus the hardship caused by and to unwanted babies. We note that this also ensures the continuing reproduction of practising Catholics. We also see that in this branch of religion there has also been a high level of child abuse by its priests.

In short, the TL;DR here is I really don’t consider Tarot reading as a sin. In fact many of my clients are Christian and use readings as a tool alongside their faith. If you’d like, I can do a free Tarot reading for you just click here.
