Whether you are new to the world of tarot or a seasoned practitioner, a 3 card spread is always a good place to start. The three-card tarot spread is one of the most popular and used spreads that lots of people do to either start their morning or end their day. Three-card spreads are popular because of the spatial positioning that the spread gives you.

Many tarot readers think that spatial positioning is a key part of tarot readings. The positioning gives it a strong juxtaposition against how we see things naturally. We process things that are grouped, generally pretty fast and with a fuller understanding because there is more than just one piece of information given at a time. Three card spreads can be structured and grouped in different ways to focus on questions you want to ask.

Three-Card Spread Specifics

The best time to do a three-card spread, or any tarot reading, is when you feel balanced and whole. This energy will help cultivate a more full-scoped reading. You can do a three-card reading for yourself or others by focusing on what you want to learn from the cards and what the cards want to tell you. Maybe you want summations of the past, present, and future, maybe you want area-specific information, think relationships, finance, and career/profession. You may want to go into the reading with no preconceived goals or questions to see what the cards want to tell you. Try meditating or practicing mindfulness beforehand to figure out what methods and readings are going to best for you or your client.

A general three-card spread focuses on the past, the present, and the future. It can also hint at any problems you are having, obstacles in your way, or different situations you find yourself in. Generally, the first card drawn represents situations you have been in, what some popular trends were in your past or something you need to take away from the past. The second card drawn represents you or your client now. What may be going right or wrong, things that might be getting missed, or suggestions for improvement. The third card is going to tell you about the future. What to expect, challenges you might face, a theme that might be reoccurring. When doing a three-card spread it is important to listen to what the cards are telling you and go from there. Ask clarifying questions to see if you can clear up any gaps in information, but note that you might not always get what you want to hear, and that’s ok.

There are many other kinds of three-card spreads including but not limited to self-discovery, problem-solving, balanced, foundational, and more. It is suggested that you do your own specific research to see which spreads and layouts will help you in your tarot journey based on what you want to know. There are lots of resources out there that can give you rundowns of each layout and spread.

Pros/Cons of Three-Card Spreads

As with everything in life, there are pros and cons to using a three-card spread. A three-card reading is more robust and inclusive when compared to a one-card reading. However, there are even more detailed and full coverage reading layouts and options. Some examples of these include a five-card spread, readings to divine information for the whole year (generally a twelve-card spread), or problems with more than two solutions or options. If you are just starting your tarot journey, a three-card spread is a good place to start due to the amount of information it can give you without being too overwhelming. The three-card spread is very popular among amateurs and professionals alike due to its simplicity but the wide scope of the content in the cards.

One thing to keep in mind with tarot is that everyone is different. You’re going to work and interact with tarot cards differently than everyone else and no one methodology or approach is going to specifically work for you. The most important part is to trust yourself and be patient. Once you can do that, you’ll feel more comfortable using and reading tarot cards and you might start seeing or feeling things you haven’t before.
