When a tarot reading has many major arcana cards, it is indicative of a pivotal moment in your life, which could be compared to reaching major milestones in a project. It means that there are important energies at work and you can expect to see some important changes. Whether or not you succeed will depend on how well you manage these energies.

A Tarot deck consists of 78 cards. The deck is divided into two groups, the minor arcana, with 56 cards and the major arcana cards which consists of 22 very special cards. Some believe the major arcana cards to be older than the minor arcana, and they believe these two decks were later merged into a single deck. Typically the entire deck is used for a tarot reading, however readings exclusively using major arcana cards, are also done.

It is important to understand the difference between minor and major arcana cards in a reading, beforehand. The Minor cards represent the realm of daily life and these cards refer to our personal sphere of experiences. The influence of minor arcana cards is shorter term than the major arcana cards . Very similar to Astrology which differentiates between the faster moving inner planets and the slower moving outer planets. In both astrology and tarot, the same principles apply, the minor arcana cards and the inner planets, both refer to distinct areas of our personal lives.

Major arcana cards and the outer planets both refer to the larger picture we inhabit, the world we live in, including the spiritual realm. Major arcana cards symbolize longer lasting influences and encompass energies outside of our personal individual realm. It could be said that the major arcana cards tap into the collective consciousness’ pool of energy.

MAJOR ARCANA CARDS AND THEIR MEANING

In a Tarot card reading, there are different spreads which can be used. The cards are interpreted according to their placement in the spread. Each card represents both the positive and negative traits it stands for. All pseudosciences take into consideration both ends of the spectrum, the light and the dark. So called, negative traits or outcomes are indicated when a card is reversed. By negative it is not intended as bad luck, simply take it as a precaution or as an opportunity for you to make the right choice. You always get to choose. The cards are a tool to self knowledge and the awareness that you always have a choice to become the best version of yourself. Some of the major arcana cards highlight this duality more than others, for example the fool, or the lovers.

The Fool

The fool literally represents the choices you have in life. It is depicted by a carefree young person, embarking on an adventure. He looks fancy free and without a worry in the world. The Fool in a tarot reading, can indicate that you will be faced with a choice, an opportunity, to make changes in your life. In a negative position it may indicate bad choices, thoughtless actions, or fear of making changes. This card may be a warning not to take off unprepared or it may be urging you to take a leap of faith. This will depend on the placement of this card in your reading and whether it refers to the past, present or future.

The Lovers

The lovers represent harmony, communication, relationships and values. This card indicates there is a choice to be made, which may challenge your personal values. You are being urged to choose with clarity and good intent, in order to stay true to yourself, in your journey. In a negative position this card indicates you may be faced with a moral dilemma and are experiencing a duality of forces at work, leading to confusion and the inability to make a balanced decision. Once again this card involve choice and it indicates that regardless of the problem you are faced with, by remaining true to your values, you will choose right by you.

Several of the major arcana cards have a male and female counterpart, such as the high priestess and the empress. These cards are a good example to show how important it is to understand and recognize that there is always duality at work in life. Male and female, light and dark and so on. It is important to remember that these opposing forces also depend on one another in order to exist.

The High Priestess

The high priestess is the symbol of fertility, abundance, sacred knowledge and the divine feminine energy at work. It rules your subconscious mind and urges you to use intuition and look deep to find answers to your questions. In a negative position it indicates a selfish, ruthless person or one who lives only with superficial knowledge. It urges you to work on your inner self.

The Empress

The empress rules over self expression, creativity and fertility. It invites you to connect to life through your senses and connect with nature. It is the archetype of the divine feminine. In a negative position it indicates you may need to take better care of yourself or that you are being over nurturing and/or codependent in your relationships.

The Emperor

The emperor is the male counterpart of the empress. This card represents authority and structures, such as governments or a father figure. It is the archetype of the divine masculine. The emperor symbolizes power, order and status. In a negative position, it may indicate a tendency to be overly dominant, asserting your powers on others and suggests you may have become rigid in your way of thinking. Depending on the placement of this card in the reading, it may indicate such a person entering your life.

Ironically, when faced with choices, people often experience stress and anxiety. Having a choice means having control. It means you get to have a say on how your life plays out. The fear of making the wrong choice may take a hold of you and you find yourself unable to think straight, let alone make a choice. The important thing to remember is that by staying true to yourself and your values, you can’t go wrong. Deep inside you have all the knowledge you need to understand and choose well. Choosing well means giving equal importance to all aspects of your being. This includes your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual self. The major arcana cards can be seen as a guide to assist you in your personal quest for self understanding, growth and evolution as a whole being.
