Difference in Appearance
One of the biggest and most obvious differences between these two sets of cards is the imagery they use and the amount in each deck. Tarot cards have a much more set structure, whereas oracle cards have a free structure and are interchangeable.
Tarot Cards
With tarot cards, the pack consists of 78 cards split into 4 decks — wands, cups, swords and pentacles. Each card has a different picture which represents a certain characteristic or emotion, and although these images can vary with different packs of cards, they all have the same general meaning.
Oracle Cards
On the other hand, oracle cards do not have a set amount per pack and none of the cards are grouped into particular decks. Although all the cards have particular meanings that can be associated with certain emotions, every pack of cards has completely different images and the reader will use as many cards as they see necessary.
Difference in Meaning
Both sets of cards also have different meanings depending on the image that is chosen. There are particular combinations that stand out more with both oracle and tarot cards, but they still have their differences.
Tarot Cards
With tarot, there are some cards, such as the Emporer, queens and kings, which give a more significant meaning. With tarot cards, there are also some card combinations which can show a more significant emotion or piece of advice than others. For example, the two of cups and the two of wands together show a focus on relationships and a deeper connection with a partner. Tarot cards from different packs have the same meaning, but this can change depending on the question asked.
Oracle Cards
On the contrary, oracle cards have as many cards in the deck as the reader sees fit, therefore, each card shows what the reader sees, rather than each card having its own specific meaning.
In conclusion, both tarot and oracle cards can show the future for a person, but the way that they are used is very different, which is why certain readers will only be specialists with one. Whilst tarot uses a specific amount of cards and each one has the same meaning in every pack, the oracle cards can have an infinite amount per pack, and the reader is the one who decides what each means. However, whichever you choose, if you go to an experienced reader, you will be given a quality vision of the future!
